Creative Fire: Money

Polestar

This week’s focus is on the subject of money,  income, abundance. It is unique to artists and artisans that we often sort of back into our career. There are few doctors or managers who started as  hobbyists! Most of us are confused, fearful, or upset about money too much of the time.

I loved this : Artists: A Natural Eye for Business, which discusses how our creative strengths make us good business people. Our task in art and business is the same; to uncover our own unique expression of it, and to use our creativity.

“What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us.” –Julia Cameron

“Shoot for the moon! Even if you miss it, you will be among the stars.”  Les Brown

I’m not a driven businessman, but a driven artist. I never think about money. Beautiful things make money.~ Geoffrey Beene

Successful people make money. It’s not that people who make money become successful, but that successful people attract money. They bring success to what they do.~ Wayne Dyer

And finally, my advice. As I look over my 34 year career as a studio artist, I see that I had a visceral, gut reaction to every business proposition. I’ve succeeded to the degree that I went with that feeling. So my advice is to listen to your own advice. Believe in your authentic self.

Great post Lee! I really love the Artist's Career blog post, especially this:
"Finally you will also need a great work ethic. You won’t necessarily have to work 12 hours every day but you should get in the habit of doing at least one thing everyday toward reaching your goal. By the end of the year you’ll be amazed with your accomplishments.

If I was only granted one wish to choose between talent or hard work I would choose hard work every time. Talent alone means nothing. There are hundreds of truly gifted people no one will ever know about because they’re lazy or unwilling. Hard workers with a plan almost always get noticed."

This is so important and so true.

Thanks so much for posting my article! Really appreciate it.

It's very important to me that artists understand we are all entrepreneurs, whether we like it or not, and in order to succeed we must learn the business skills necessary to survive.

But the good thing is that it's not a foreign concept to us. Most times artists and business are considered to be polar opposites when they are not. There is more in common than we think.

I wonder if that idea that the two don't go together comes from the idea that if you are an artist AND business person at the same time, somehow your a sellout and only concerned with money.
