Ringing in 2011: artisan resolutions and predictions - Part ONE

As the clocks winds down on 2010, it's time to look ahead to the New Year. We asked artisans around the world for their predictions and resolutions.  New techniques? Personal goals? Emerging trends?

As the handmade movement enters a fresh year, these team members share with us what they hope to achieve, and what their art might look like this year.  Here is Part One of our two-part series. Look for Part Two later this week.

For embroidery artist Rose of Waterrose, "my resolution is to learn at least one new form of embroidery and then design some pieces based on this new ability. I'm really excited to create something with the newly discovered and learned technique!"

In 2011, Swedish artist Britta, from birribe, is "working on some new textile jewelry for the next year. It will be a surprise. I will try to use the material in a new way. For the new year I wish to exercise more to improve my physical condition. That´s easy to think about but hard to do."

Evelyn, the artisan behind Sumikoshop, who lives in an Italian coastal town, says that she's "waiting for the results of a collaboration (to be a surprise) and I plan to make new hair accessories." You can check out both in her shop here, in the coming year.

Lee, the North Carolinian pottery behind OneClayBead, wants "to explore a new motif- penguins. I have so many penguin poses in my head waiting to take shape."

Dutch designer Bai from ThongbaiTong says that her designs in the past have been 'all over the place', as she's worked to create a collection that's fun and practical.  "In 2011 I will work on themes and the first theme will be fun, modern clothing items with a '20s influence - Flapper and Art Deco styles. I have touched on this in my skirts and dresses that have boldness, geometry and contrast. But more distinct designs will come this year. My second resolution is to focus on the quality of the materials used. I want to use the best quality fabrics and materials that I can find for every piece of clothing."

Austrian beadwork artist Viktoria is "working on a completely new design for beaded pendants, to broaden my range. I think they might be great to be worn to spring and summer fashion." Look for them in her shop, Donauluft.
