10) TIME: I had my Facebook business page up and running in 15 minutes. It takes months to research where to host a website, who to hire to do it, or how to do it yourself.

1) SALES: I made $200 in sales directly as a result of my OneClayBead Lee Wolfe Pottery Facebook page the very first week. It took me months to make that much from my Etsy shop when I started, and a website, with no built in traffic, would undoubtedly be vastly slower, and take more effort to generate sales.

I understand the skepticism of those who look at Facebook as either a comet that may burn out and disappear, or a blight on our human evolution or a doorway to privacy invasion. I respect those assessments, and have held them myself to some degree at one point or another. Still, I am happy with my decision to use Facebook as a business tool… so far.

As retail sales move increasingly online, commerce in the arts is rapidly shifting. Marketing tips for handmade artisans are so pervasive that marketing your marketing tips is now also a mushrooming phenomenon. While there are a few stellar sites offering quality advice for free, such as Handmadeology, which has, overall, the best, most up-to-date articles, much of the advice is about how to establish link farms on every available social media site. While this grows Etsy’s business by increasing page views, and may result in some sales, it won’t grow your business. Why? Because you really don’t need individual sales. What you need is True Fans. It takes a lot more effort to sell 1 thing to 1,000 people than to sell 1,000 things to 1 person. A True Fan is a loyal, repeat buyer. You establish this relationship by offering a genuine connection, a way to engage people who are interested in you. One of the best ways to do that is to look at social media sites as a way to virtually entertain, to throw a big party, to have an intimate dinner, to open your studio to a weekly discussion.

So, your Pinterest boards could create a virtual space serving your favorite treats to eat, decorated in your own style, with bookcases of your favorite books. Just like your home, the things that you make are there, but your entire house is not a billboard. And there aren’t price tags all over, either.

Your blog is a peek into your workspace, with a chance to see how you work, and what you think about.

Your Facebook business page could be a cafe where you meet friends for a quick chat.

Once I understood this, using social media sites became as natural for me as telling a kindred spirit to “stop on by” when you are in my neighborhood.

Everyday Handmade: Dreaming of Spring

Happy New Year! I hope you're having a wonder-filled beginning to your 2012!

Outside my window as I write this, the wind is howling and the whole scene is gray and white. It's deep winter here in Boulder, Colorado! And yet . . . I'm dreaming of spring. I've been obsessively reading gardening books and planning out all that I will grow this year, even though our last frost date here is in the middle of May. Wishful thinking I suppose! I thought some of you out there might be able to relate and could use a little fanciful warm-up (and who doesn't love spring anyway?). So here it goes, some visions of spring for this installment of Everyday Handmade:

She Puts People and Planet First

Every dollar you spend is a vote for how you want the world to be and who you want to control it. I recently asked Sarah Jane of Bodhi Handmade about her business, her brand and how she puts people and planet first and here's what she said...

"When I first moved to Alaska, it was for a job that kept me really busy. By the time my second daughter was born, the summer seasons were so busy that there were days I left for work before my girls were up, and got home just in time to put them to bed for the night. Not only did I not find much time to make things with my hands, I did not have much time to be a mother. My children are by far the most beautiful thing I have ever brought into this world, and I needed to be with them more often, to enjoy the beauty of who they are. My unhappiness about not leading the sort of life with my children that I had envisioned, along with some life changes, led my husband and I to decide that I should leave my job. I needed to be at home with my children, whatever that meant."

"It is important for me to put things into the world that are beautiful to me. I try to spend part of every day creating something. It does not always matter what: a simple thank you card, a dress, a fall garland, or even a sketch on a napkin. It is in the process of creating that I find joy.

I believe that community is often as important as family, they are kind of the same for us. I am constantly humbled and amazed by the community of support that I have. When I was first at home with the girls, trying to figure out what was next, I started kicking around the idea of doing some sewing for income. The support that came from so many people, in so many forms was overwhelming. I do my best now to show my gratitude, and give back to my community.

Being “the boss” gives me the freedom to drop what I am doing and take the girls for a walk when we just can’t ignore the sunshine, or to scoot the work aside for a project that they want to do. It also allows me to involve my children in the process where that is possible. Not only do they appreciate what handmade really means, but my six year old can run a sewing machine, my 4 year old can open and close a safety pin to put a tag on a skirt. And I am learning as much from them as they are from me. It is a real gift for all of us. It is also incredibly satisfying to me to be able to adjust what I do based on feedback, both from my children, and from other people who are involved in the process. When something is not working, I have the freedom to immediately change it.

Although I am still just getting started, and my business is not a dependable source of income yet, I have already felt the satisfaction of being able to give time and resources that I have when and where they are needed. To give an example: When the first tsunami hit Japan, I was awakened early in the morning by a phone call from a concerned family member, and a possible evacuation scare. In the end, our island was in no real danger, but I could not go back to sleep. I lay there thinking about the people who were affected, who were not able to just go back to bed that morning. I could not go about my day just pretending nothing had happened. So I dug out a stash of beautiful scraps of fabric imported from Japan that I had been saving, and started making items to list in my Etsy shop, donating 100% of the money to tsunami relief. It was a small thing, but it was something. And when I donated that money, it felt so wonderful to be able to take some sort of action rather than just feel helpless, or become complacent."

"As bodhi handmade continues to grow, I am hopeful and excited. I know that we will always be finding new ways to “give back” and integrate what we value into how we make our living. And for now, I am doing what I love with the people who I love most."

Can shopping promote freedom? Hmm, maybe that seems like a stretch. Certainly the accumulation of stuff for stuff's sake can't equate to freedom but just maybe how and where we shop can help ensure choice and diversity.

Fingerless Gloves by Tickled Pink Kints

I decided to look for some answers by being my own guinea pig and went in search of fingerless gloves. My closest big box store offered two kinds of fingerless gloves. The styles were slightly different and only came in 3 color combinations - pink, black or pink and black.They were, thin, poorly made and at $2 and $3 appeared to make a strong case for “you get what you pay for”. The buyers for major retailers make many preliminary decisions for us. They limited color, style, quality and price. They separated me from the maker and the process. Aren’t I smart enough to make those decisions myself? According to Jeff Milchen at ReclaimDemocray.org “As fewer giant corporations dominate both production and sales, our options - determinded by a powerful few - will be drastically reduced.”

Persian Green Mohair Fingerless Gloves by Love and Knit

Now consider my expericence shopping for fingerless gloves from small independent sellers. I typed fingerless gloves into the Etsy search box and came up with 21,619 items. While some of the shops have the same style/color limitations as “Big Box”, combined they created great diversity! I could chose from long, short, fold-over mitten, with buttons, without buttons, stripes, fancey, plain, men’s or women’s, natural or man made fibers. I narrowed my search further and found for example that just one of Tickled Pink Kint's 10 fingerless glove designs can be ordered in 16 different colors. (Sierra? Ruby Red? Sea Blue?).

The U.S. Small Business Administration says that the average American shopper will spend $704.18 on holiday gifts and seasonal merchandise this year. So while you’re making your list and checking it twice remember, each dollar is a vote for the kind of world you want. Vote wisely.

Small Business Saturday

Started in 2010 by American Express, this movement has already made a significant impact on cultural awareness of the benefits of shopping with small businesses.
Traditionally, Black Friday is gobbled up by big boxes and then Cyber Monday is controlled by mega giants on the internet. Independent business got elbowed out, so Small Business Saturday is all about staking a claim on one day this weekend to focus on doing holiday shopping with small business. Although the movement currently promotes brick and mortar shops, I would love to see it expanded to indie artisans who sell online.
This year promotion on Twitter and Facebook have been viral. It has over 2 million ‘likes’ on Facebook by people pledging to spend money. American Express is offering $25 to cardholders who shop at registered businesses. All quite impressive for a second year movement.
Cinda Baxter, founder of the 3/50 Project, was a national spokesperson for Small Business Saturday. The 3/50 Project encourages consumers to commit to spending $50 of their current monthly budgets with independently owned small businesses they care about.

The intention of People and Planet First is to identify small indie businesses who offer quality gifts for the holiday season that create just, sustainable, and joyful livelihoods. We will encourage these artisan and vintage sellers to tell their individual stories, and spread the word about how we offer alternatives to the perpetuation of Wall Street greed.

Our goal is to raise awareness that indie businesses offer a profound alternative to the Wall Street corporate structure that must produce quarterly profit for stockholders who do no actual work to make any tangible goods. Our businesses support individuals, families, and communities who care about the planet that must support our children and their children.

We would like to invite other Etsy teams to join us! This is a season when we can look past our differences and celebrate the ideals we hold in common. ArtisansGalleryTeam is a group of studio artisans with advanced skills and professional business practices who came together to share our support for the Handmade Movement. Although our team is small and exclusive, we recognize that our values are shared by many other Etsy sellers and teams.

So here is the plan:

The Don’t Do List, pt 3: Don’t Play Small

Creating a successful business with your talent and skills is not for the timid, the petty, nor the shallow mind. It takes guts to put yourself out there each day and offer up something made with heart. It takes being in a perpetual creative flow of innovation, which means not allowing yourself to get dragged down into negative or fear based perspectives.

Our Don’t Do List is offered by Artisans Gallery Team members from the lessons we’ve learned by making and observing mistakes. Sometimes the best advice is about what not to do!

1) Don’t take it personally!

It’s a given that you won’t like every communication from buyers, or comments posted in the Forums. But if you approach every-day workspace communications with too much personal passion and enthusiasm, your day can get eaten up with worry and resentment. You may also lose opportunities by misreading someone’s intentions.

As Eve of EvesLttleEarthlings observes:

Don't get annoyed when customers ask for a discount. The forums are full of sellers who think this is an insult. I personally never give discounts, but usually when I politely explain why, they purchase at full price anyway.

Don't tell customers you are having a bad day, or your life problems. Keep it upbeat and joyful especially around the holidays. Stay focused on the topic and keep it simple.

2) Don’t stand still.

Keep moving and progressing in your work. It’s fun for you, and good for business, too.

As Lauren of lapisbeach says:

Don't be afraid to try new things. When I first opened my Etsy shop I only had soft knit items in my shop. With a friend's encouragement- I started experimenting with wire.....now the wire line dominates my shop listings. Who knows what is next!

3) “Don't copy someone else's work - even if you can, even if they are selling like mad.” – from Genevieve of jibbyandjuna

It’s not fair, it’s not legal, and it’s not good businesswise to copy someone’s original designs. If an image inspires you, your final product must deviate from the inspiration piece by at least 30% in order to be legally defensible as your own work.

Copying: All Risk and No Reward

"Autumn Hues" by Yael Berger of The Joy of Color

In the art world, imitation is rarely seen as the sincerest form of flattery, but instead as violation of intellectual property rights. In a recent AGTeam article, the line between Inspiration and Copying was clearly defined. Yet, artists who are perfectly aware of this line will often still copy. Too often, an artist will convince themselves that they aren't copying and that the style, image, or idea is a generic one and they weren't influenced by someone's work. While the reasons why this hurts the original creator who is being copied are fairly clear, the plain fact is that it hurts you as an artist to copy and sell another's work without permission more than anyone else.

Three of the major drawbacks to copying are:

It's not just an illegal copyright violation, you can permanently damage your reputation as an artist. If people see you to be copying, they may begin to assume that it's because you aren't capable of creative ideas of your own. Even the integrity of your original work can be diminished because people may lose respect for you as an artist.

You don't create an identity of your own when you copy. When potential customers run across your work, they may mistake it for the original artist's and even vice versa. This doesn't help you out at all and can hurt the original artist.

As an Etsy seller, you run the risk of having your shop closed. Etsy reserves the right to close down shops that don't operate within their terms of use and having a claim made against you for copyright violation can be enough reason for them to close you down.

The costs of copying someone far outweigh any benefits that could be gained. Large companies, small businesses, and individuals have all found themselves in hot water for doing it. The best policy is to respect other artist's as you would like them to respect you and not reproduce their work without permission.

The DON’T DO list, pt 2, to avoid negative feedback

In order to have a successful transaction in internet sales, you need to deliver a great product in a timely fashion, but that is not enough. You must also understand the expectations of your buyers. It is critical to know PayPal’s policies for both buyer and seller protection as well. There are many ways in which good sellers with great products incur negative feedback on Etsy. Some of it is unavoidable, but keeping a high score overall greatly helps your success. As a team of successful sellers with good feedback, we’ve learned how to resolve or avoid most of the situations that result in an unhappy buyer. Here are our best tips to avoid negative feedback:

1) Always reply quickly, and communicate with thorough details and respect. As Estella from Staroftheeast (feedback score 2333, 100%) says,

Don't keep a question of a buyer or potential buyer unanswered, no matter how bad, negative or annoying the question/problem is. Not answering is the worst you can do, and will only make a buyer very angry :)
p.s. I have seen lots of sellers who got their neg. or neutral feedback because of lack of communication and/or not answering convo's.

2) Give precise details in each listing. Buyers are unhappy when something is larger or smaller than they imagined.

Diane of SignsByDiane (feedback score 855, 100% positive) says:

Please don't leave me guessing just how large or small something is....and since this is a US based site please have measurements posted in inches too.

3) Take responsibility for your part in the transaction problem. Don’t get overly defensive or blaming- that just polarizes the situation.

As Sarah-Lambert Cook from TuckooandMooCow (feedback score 855, 100%)says:

Don't be afraid to own your mistakes. Customers appreciate knowing and you can often win a fan for life by owning your own mistakes and fixing them right away.

4) Understand a Buyer’s Rights as interpreted by both PayPal and Etsy.

As Lee of OneClayBead (feedback score 1482, 100%) has learned:

Don't tell a buyer whose package has just gone missing that they are flat out of luck. Whether you think it is fair or not, you will be held liable for non-delivery in most cases. PayPal will side with a buyer unless you have delivery confirmation and a confirmed address. And even if PayPal sides with you, the buyer can appeal to their credit card holder for a chargeback. So the best approach with a buyer who hasn't received their package is to respond immediately with any info that you have, and a concerned and friendly tone. Make efforts to track down the package. And be prepared to refund all or part of their money if necessary, with courtesy. Having insurance for expensive pieces helps!

5) Actively work towards a win/win resolution. Refrain from unprofessional insults to unhappy buyers.

Heather of HeatherKent (feedback score 691, 100%) wisely advises:

Don't burn any bridges - You don't know which customers will come back and order dozens more items from you! Treat every customer as if they are your only customer.

As seasoned Etsy sellers, we’ve learned what you need to do to succeed and thrive. Our most valuable lessons have come from making and observing costly mistakes, so don’t not read this list, as members share the best from their personal DON’T DO lists.

When you are SHIPPING:

1) DON’T leave a buyer guessing about how and when their package will be arriving.

Jen of SewnNatural advises:

Don't silently take in orders. Once someone places an order, we send them a note (ideally within a few hours) to thank them, confirm their order, the shipping method and timeframe, and let them know we will send them another message as soon as their order ships out. We go over details and shipping info that might not have been noticed by the buyer.

2) DON’T assume that a buyer has read all of your shop policies, listing copy, and shop announcement where you’ve specified vital shipping info.

As Yael of TheJoyofColor says:

Don't take for granted that buyers read all the information in your listing. In your thanks you note to buyer specify again the time it takes for an item to arrive. Especially if you are an international seller, this can save lots of embarrassment.

3) DON’T “gestimate” postage. You will lose repeat business if you inconvenience a buyer.

Ugh, I had to go to the post office today and wait in line to pay the $.43 postage due on an item that I ordered.

4) DON’T save money with inferior packing material. Reused materials are fine as long as they aren’t ragged and dirty.

Fall is my favorite season---there are the golden days with the beginning of a crispness, and the dark cold nights with a tinge of wood fire smell from any neighbor who might have a fireplace, and the chance to start bundling up again after the hot days of summer. It's not jacket weather quite yet in my town, but we're closing in, and with that comes the chance to stock up on beautiful handmade things that will keep you cozy. Today, for my Everyday Handmade series I'm rounding up some warm wearables---specifically scarves and such. Here we go . . .

Intellectual Property Rights for Artisans

An artist owns the copyright to his/her work, even if the work is not registered, according to US law. While this is fairly common knowledge, many of us are a bit murky about what copyright protects, exactly. We also are generally unsure about how to protect our rights as artists.

As an artist, when you sell a piece of work, you retain the copyright to that work, unless stated otherwise. A buyer cannot purchase your work and then reproduce it. A photograph is considered a reproduction- so no one can use photographs of your work for their own publicity and promotional intents without your permission, even if they own, or plan to buy, the piece itself.

There are many instances where it is beneficial to us to grant permission, as getting our work seen, especially with a link back so that viewers can buy our work, is great publicity. Click on these images to see the piece in the artisan’s shop! But sometimes it isn’t. Here’s how I dealt with this situation:

A blogger asked if she could use my bowl for a giveaway on her blog. I declined her offer. She decided to proceed anyway, planning to purchase the bowl herself and then give it away. She used my photographs from my Etsy store to do so.

I researched my legal rights and sent her a communication that praised her blog, acknowledged that she may not be aware of the legal infringement, and directed her to remove the photos. I also let her know, firmly and respectfully, that even if she purchased my bowl and took her own photos, that I did not grant permission for my work to be used in a giveaway. Nothing against those of you who choose to participate in giveaways! I don’t, and am using this as an example of the right we have, as artists, to control how and where, our work is used.

I received an immediate and respectful compliance and apology. The blogger also thanked me for helping her understand the legalities involved. Most people, I believe, want to honor the rights of artists, and prefer to be law abiding. These honest souls will do the right thing as soon as they understand their accidental violation.

Marci worked on her large poppy bowls just before she left for college. It takes some advanced clay skills to make a hand built bowl this large. Pinterest and TumblR Strategies for Promotion

To successfully use Pinterest and TumblR to promote your own work and that of our team, you must first attract a following. That following is most effective when it consists of as many non- Etsy shops as possible, since just trading pins with those who already know your work is useless. Yes, you can fill your team promo points by opening a Pinterest or TumblR account and filling your quota of team submissions, but it won’t help your teammates, and most importantly, it won’t help you!

To be effective, create boards and posts with unusual and narrowly focused content, especially when you are beginning. Plan to spend hours the first week finding great content that fits your own chosen themes.

On my Tumbleblog, I gained a following early on by posting unusual content. Over time I added some of my own and that of our team. Although I don’t add team submissions every day, when I do, they are seen by people who aren’t already familiar with your work, and that’s the goal!

I am just getting a handle on Pinterest but find it highly promising. I am getting more views from there than TumblR now. If you see my boards on Pinterest, you will find team work, and my own, scattered throughout. One kiss of death is to have a pinboard named “AGTeam” or “Etsy”, as people will unfollow just that board. It is better to place your promotions strategically throughout your other boards, and surround them with powerful, moving, engaging imagery.

Since Pinterest gets more views for our shops, I am now using TumblR to find great content for my pin boards, and pinning team work among that. This became clear when my own bird plates were chosen on TumblR as a featured tag for #crafts, and were endlessly reblogged. The traffic to my Etsy shop was minimal. The same plates on Pinterest, were only repinned a handful of times, but are generating up to 10 views in my Etsy shop/ week.

Everyday Handmade: Tree Inspiration

I love trees---I love how they wave and whisper, giving you an idea of something bigger. Even when I'm feeling frantic, if I can stop and take a moment to watch the trees out the window I feel instantly calmed. So, for this installment of Everyday Handmade, I am rounding up some tree inspiration for all of the other tree lovers like me out there! Here we go . . .

I saw this sweetest "Little Trees" zipper pouch by Sea Pinks, and it was love at first sight! I love the organic colors, the natural materials, and of course--the cute embroidered trees! What a fun way to carry just about anything around with you! Find it here.

designing fabric is something that i had been contemplating for a long time. there is a side of my art~making that seems to lend itself to the concept of repetition! a lot of my sketches/doodles are of flowers and plants which seem to drift/float/move across the page, almost without my planning! i have tried painting some of these drawings and digitally colouring them to make prints, but felt that those mediums were not quite right. so the combination of minimalism, repetition and the desire to embrace and continue with this kind of work led me to the medium of fabric.

i invested in a great book: 'digital textile design' by melanie bowles and ceri isaac which has tutorials on making repeats in photoshop and illustrator, and a monitor calibrator. i spent some time educating myself about the technicalities of colour and reproduction. it was really important for me to be able to have my designs made with the actual colours that i worked with on screen. i had heard from other designers that this could be a a challenge with digital printing of fabric. i'm really happy with the results colourwise!

the other part of the process involved following my instincts and experimenting.

now i'm addicted and eager to make more!

Why Being Slow Matters

If you love to eat and cook, and also work with your hands... you're definitely not alone. An appreciation for artisanal food, and a creative way of life (the focus of the work of the Artisans Gallery team) go hand in hand. Etsy has recognized this and quite freqneutly highlights (amazingly delicious looking) food and recipes on their blog. But it's not just about any food. And it's not just about any "goods".

It's all about the s-l-o-w. Slow food is a way of life, and an international community and I love how it celebrates quality and pleasure. A commitment to sourcing one's ingredients from the local butcher, baker and organic farm, for example, is part of the way of life. Here in Ottawa, one of our favorite go-to places is the Piggy Market, where carefully sourced, ethically raised and fed meat is prepared in a slow, labor-intensive and eco-conscious way (using other local, largely organic produce and supplies). The result is truly delicious, and sits as easily on our consciences as in our tummies.

Slow cloth is the extension of the principles and philosophy of Slow into the world of artists, artisans and entrepreneurs. There’s “slow fashion”, “slow clothing” too. Artisans who form the Artisans Gallery Team - who work slowly, by hand, to make one of a kind pieces, are part of this movement.

I love this quote by Sharon Astyk, she says it so very eloquently (this is from her 2006 article from Groovy Green Magazine):

“I think there are a number of really good reasons to find and learn ways to make clothing, to prioritize homemade, or locally made clothing (including learning to find it beautiful), and perhaps to create a “Slow Clothing” or “Slow Fashion” movement rather like the “Slow Food” movement currently picking up speed. Maybe it’s as simple as creating a campaign in which each of us would have at least one daily wearable outfit that we’ve made ourselves, a kind of democratic fashion statement that acknowledges that our clothing comes with human and environmental costs.”

Slow cloth, like slow food, and slow fashion, is focussed on the journey, not only the destination. It honors skill, grace and diversity (and artisanal, local producers and artists) and it focusses on what is sustainable, as beautiful to look at as it is for the earth. And it’s about community.

I spend a lot of time thinking about how to become more sustainable, how to think about what we do and what we make from cradle to cradle. Rather than seeing what we make as going from cradle to grave (i.e. landfill, as waste) - it's great to consider them from cradle to cradle, closing the loop and essentially making as little waste as possible. One of the ways we seek to do that is by waste-free cutting of our fabrics, and the use of whatever very small scraps we create.

I love the way Etwas (creator of gorgeous, handmade leather bags) puts it:
"Consider not only the things we are making,
but the things we are destroying."

For me, "Slow" is as delicious as it is inspiring, and I want to learn all I can about Slow Food, Slow Cloth and Slow Fashion. And just maybe all this Slow will also help me learn to live even more in the present, soaking in the seasons, my childrens' laughter, and the way time, every so often, seems to pause and stand still.

Are Artists Natural Born Con Artists?

Consider this: According to Ian Leslie, “there is a gushing river of verbal creativity in the normal human mind, from which both artistic invention and lying are drawn. We are born storytellers, spinning narrative out of our experience and imagination, straining against the leash that keeps us tethered to reality.”

As artists and artisans we imagine, we invent, we reinterpret reality. We inarguably use the same skill set as cons. Evidence of the intermarriage of art and con can be found in numerous Etsy shops, and as we are encouraged to tell colorful anecdotes about ourselves to capture buyers, you have to wonder how many profiles are true vs. intentional fabrications.

In my observation, there are two distinctly different paths into the arts, two separate motivations. One is primarily driven by the need for praise, for an audience, for money and status, for beating out one’s competition. The other is a path traveled by those who have discovered the joy of mastery and discovery. Artisans Gallery Team was conceived as an alliance of the latter. When we are functioning at our highest and best, we are able to praise and promote the new works of other artisans because we take joy in discovery whether it is from others’ or our own.

One way to spot a con is that every story they tell glorifies themselves, often denigrating others in the process. Whereas an artist on the second path tells a universal story that reaches for insight, using personal facts as illustrations. When we vet and jury for this team we are looking for that type of commitment to authenticity.

Everyday Handmade: Blooming Earrings

It's high summer in the northern hemisphere, and here around my new home in Boulder, Colorado, everything's blooming! Every morning when I'm walking my dog through the open space near my house, I see sweet little flowers all along the way!

Etsy’s Activity Feed Serves up Some Sales

In this post, I questioned the power of social commerce to help artisans connect with our buyers. I wondered if this move was visionary or vastly stupid. Since then I've received several conversations from buyers that have moved me to take a stand. I now think that Etsy’s move towards social commerce is brilliant.

My first evidence was in my notes to seller from a buyer:

"Oh my, I nearly swooned! I came to Etsy looking a piece of sea glass when this delicious tidbit popped up on the opening page. I love it when I find exactly what I wasn't looking for. I have the perfect spot ready and waiting for this little beauty!"

Exactly what I wasn’t looking for is precisely what most artists make! So this looked promising. Images that fit a person’s taste, but don’t exactly match what they are intentionally searching for, result in sales.

Next, I received a message from someone who added me to their Circle, so what I heart shows up in their Activity Feed. The message thanked me profusely for hearting something that she purchased instantly upon sight. It was a perfect gift for her husband.

Only a few days later, it happened to me. I saw something in my Activity Feed and had to have it! Sold. It was exactly what I wasn’t looking for. And I’ve been thinking that perhaps art is that which pulls us like a gravitational force, commanding our attention. How perfect that we find art in capricious and nonlinear ways.

Everyday Handmade: Art Prints

Hello Hello! It's been more than a month since my last Everyday Handmade post, and now I'm writing from my new home in Boulder, Colorado! Yay!

The dust from moving has finally settled, and we're beginning to do the things that make a house a home: working, relaxing, cooking, and hanging out in our new place. Of course, no home would really be a home without artwork on the walls---I think art is THE thing that can take a regular old house and make it into a unique space that inspires you and feels like your own. And so today with that in mind, I'm doing a round up of beautiful art prints from the Artisans Gallery Team. The thing I love about art prints is that they're affordable, which means: you can buy MORE art!

There is so much great art created by Artisans Gallery Team members, that I must admit it was hard to pick just a small collection. This here is a personal favorite of mine {in fact I have it on my wall right now}, with a quote from one of my all time favorite poets E.E. Cummings. For inspired, colorful, organic artworks, look no further than Gretchen Mist. This one's called "Mist with Flowers," and I love how it's like a little window to the natural world through the brain of the artist. Find it here.

Social Commerce - Does it Work for Us?

Etsy is on the social commerce bandwagon big time. In theory, this should help the buyer who wants fine art and indie artisan work to find what they are looking for, by following the tastemakers of their choice in Etsy’s circles and activity feeds. Although it is too early to tell if Etsy’s move is visionary or vastly stupid, it is not too early to form an opinion and duke it out in Etsy’s forums!

I decided to do a bit of research on how social shopping is doing in general. here’s what I've found.

1) Social commerce works by allowing shoppers access to advice and recommendations from past buyers. Etsy’s feedback system is quite effective in this regard. I’m less convinced that following a person’s favorites or treasury lists is as effective.

2) Although 72% of retailers plan to spend more on social media marketing, less than 2% of orders among the retailers surveyed were the result of shoppers coming from a social network, according to The Purchase Path of Online Buyers report 2010, Forrester Research and GSI Commerce.

What does this tell us? That 98% of buyers are making up their own minds about what to buy, independent of what is posted on Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest. Maybe this is because we don’t essentially rely on what is posted on the internet. Or maybe this this trend is still new and will grow in time.

3) The big winners so far in the social shopping arena are Groupon and Facebook. Both of these depend largely on sharing info about “deals” and discounts. This isn’t useful for art or artisan work.

4) The upside of social shopping is that it is engaging. People may stay on Etsy’s site longer in order to channel surf through all the various links to circles and favorites. Unfortunately this is all about as random as browsing new listings. Until our potential buyers are shown concentrated lists of the high quality artisan works that interest them, I’m not convinced that social shopping on Etsy is effective for us.

Understand Market Value or Fail!

If you are using a formula such as cost of materials x 3 + labor = retail price to set the price of art or artisan work, you are dooming yourself to failure. This formula can tell you whether your business is theoretically profitable, but it won’t guarantee that your work will sell successfully at those prices. All artists and artisans need to understand how the market value of art and craft is determined.

Market value is the price at which an asset would trade in a competitive auction setting. In investments, market value is: the current quoted price at which investors buy or sell a share of common stock or a bond at a given time.

This distinction is critical! The value of your work is not determined by your costs nor your labor! It is determined solely by what others are willing to pay for it in a competitive market. You must get into the heads of your potential buyers and find out what they value, and why they choose one piece of work over another.

Here’s the game plan for success:

1) Get out of the most broadly competitive genres. Make work that is as unique as possible. Style and present it in your photos in a highly original way. Deliver something fresh and new frequently. Try to narrow your competition from thousands of similar shops on Etsy to just a few.

2) Stock prices rise and fall depending on supply and demand, but never forget that you are in charge of your own declared worth. You set your prices! It is better to offer low, introductory prices on new work than to discount old work that did not sell. Raise your prices on your most popular pieces as they become popular, and voila! Your stock just went up. This is far more strategic than having a high introductory price that deflates over time. When you do that, you are making your own stock go down! Offering a low price that increases as demand increases is a reflection of your understanding of market value.

3) When you are stretching and growing, don’t list everything you produce for sale. Make sure that every listing in your shop has your unique touch, and a degree of mastery in its making. The high quality overall helps establish your brand as worthy of top dollar.

I hope this sheds some light on pricing for success. What works for Target and Macy’s will doom you to failure and disappointment as an artisan.

Why Deep Discounts Don’t Benefit Your Artisan Business

The Handmade Revolution was founded to support indie artisans in making a fair wage living by selling retail without a middleman or working for a corporate chain. As part of the New Economy, “a fair economy that works for people and the planet”, artisans have unprecedented opportunities to connect with an avid and growing sector of buyers who want to change the world by changing their spending habits; by voting with their wallets. As part of the New Economy, I buy free range organic eggs from a local farm. I buy luxury quality handmade bags from an indie designer, one of a kind individually made jewelry, and hand stitched home decor.

These things are not selected because they are the cheapest available. Each of these small business owners has a family to support, and, just as I buy fair trade coffee, I expect to pay a price for these quality goods that supports the modest lives of the makers and allows their dreams to grow.

As artisans, we can compete on price or quality, and competing on price is a losing proposition, as factories can always sell their soulless goods for less. Discount shoppers and bargain chasers are not our target market. And this is why Heartsy, which is a Groupon version for Etsy shoppers, cannot deliver on their promise to grow your indie artisan business.

If people want to support indie handmade businesses but want 65% off in order to do it, they are highly unlikely to return for more at full price. They are far more likely to simply use the next Heartsy coupon available, which is what happens with Groupon shoppers overall.

It is infinitely more worthwhile to advertise and promote the quality of our work, and to reach out to buyers who are looking for that. 70% of my Etsy buyers return for more, and I offer no discounts. I give the best that I have at the fairest price to everyone, and this is building the kind of customer base that allows me to make a living wage. Offering a modest (10%- 15%) discount is all a good indie business needs to do when an incentive seems necessary. This business model works for me, and I recommend it to other artisans. When you put your heart and soul into making an honest and conscientious business, you deserve to profit from it, and slashing profits drastically isn’t necessary to gain attention.

Inspiration or Copy: Where is the Line?

If you see someone's work, and you’d like to make an exact duplicate of it for sale, describing and listing it exactly the same way, is that good business instinct, following a popular trend and therefore fair game, or a compliment to the artisan who made the original? Emphatically, no. It is intellectual property theft. That’s right, theft.

The person you are mimicking is a business person as well as a creator. They intend to make a profit from their own designs, as they should. As you should not. After all, if you admired someone’s taste, and broke into their house to steal their stuff, would you expect them to be flattered? Praise your business acumen? I think not!

Being a copycat derives from one of 2 things (and sometimes both):

1) a malicious intention to make a profit with unethical practices

2) entering a marketplace as a seller without having spent the time to develop a body of work of your own

To recap, it is never “inspiration” to look at someone’s work and decide to do one like it, even if you add very minor tweaks.

MerrittHyde and I see the world through a similar lens, and it shows in our work. She recently said that she admired this piece of mine:

We already have 2 similar elements, the wood body (even though mine is faux bois), and the leaves. While looking at my piece, she envisioned using her metal leaves as a canopy, similar to mine. This is inspiration. Merritt is mentally progressing something in her own body of work. Her new piece will have elements similar to mine, but it will not be a copy.

Why Do Women in the Arts Make Less than Men?

It shocks me to read that college educated women earn only 68% of the salaries their equally qualified male peers earn. Women in the Arts fare slightly better; we earn 75% of our male counterparts. But you have to ask, why, when we set our own prices in the arts, are men out- earning women by 25%?

This study shows that women’s expectations are significantly lower than men’s. The study also found that women were more likely to emphasize a balance between a career and a personal life and contributing to society, while men were focused on advancing their careers and building a sound financial base, both factors that contribute to bigger salaries.

Does this explain why men are only 4% of the sellers on Etsy, where less than 1,000 sellers make $30,000/year, according to Inc Magazine? I think that female sellers on Etsy are overly impressed by the high minded mission statements and the lure of social groups via forums and teams. If we made it a priority to advance our business and build a sound financial base, we might make 100 times $785, which is what the average seller grosses in a year.

As a team of artisans, we are all advanced in our technical skills and creative visions. We all deserve to be earning at least $50,000/yr, which is the average income for an artist. If you are part time, that number should be $25,000. I would bet that many of us earn less.

Why is that? And honestly, would your husband, brother, boyfriend or father be satisfied with this?

Everyday Handmade: Wearable Art

Hello Hello! It's time for this week's round-up of Everyday Handmade! I'm going to be on the move in the next month---I'm moving from my home in Northern California to a new home in Boulder, Colorado! Sadly, this means that this Everyday Handmade series will be taking a little break for the month of June. But first, since all of my art and lovely homey things will be packed up in boxes, I thought I'd search out some portable art---the kind that can go with you on any journey, as it rides along on your person. It's that time of year for all of the ladies in the Northern Hemisphere: skirt time. The weather is getting warmer, and it's time to break out sweet skirts. Truth be told, it's raining outside my window right now in northern California, but the days are getting longer, and I know sunshine's just around the bend. Such spring gaiety sent me on a search through the Artisans Gallery Team wares for lovely comfy skirts, and I found some beauties---skirts that look cute but will also move with everyday life. Here we go:

Life has it's ups and downs, and sometimes you just need a cute face to look at! This week I'm rounding up the cutest company I can find---the most adorable little critters created by the lovely members of the Artisans Gallery Etsy Team. These little guys will sit by you and smile while you work, and are guaranteed to lift your heart!

This little hedgehog comes to us from Sabahnur, a wonder-filled shop of crocheted cuteness! Don't you love his round physique and sweet coloring? Find him and all of his animal friends here.

Bring the woods into your home with this sweet little white-tailed deer from Eve's Little Earthlings! {find it here with its other woodland pals}. This guy's made from a repurposed wool sweater!

For the brightest cuteness around, check out this Twinky Star from Bubbletime! Doesn't this guy make your heart melt? Find him and a whole lot more cuteness here!

"I met Kath from NaturalPetProducts in the Etsy treasuries some time ago. We became such good friends that I decided to call her Sis as I feel I found a sister over the ocean. We support each other not only on Etsy but in our personal life as well.

When I listed my first "Stack of Bowls" print, Kath loved it so much that I decided to send it to her as a present for Easter/Passover. Of course, I had to ask for her address and before I could even send it to her she bought it! So refunded her as I wanted it to be a present."

"Last week I got a notice from the Post office about a package. I was a bit worried as I didn't order anything

lately, so I thought "oh no! one of my deliveries was returned, I'm in trouble!"

What a wonderful surprise to discover at the Post office that it was not one of my envelopes! The mystery envelop had a sticker from the BucktoothedBunny. What could it be? I couldn't wait and opened it at the post office and discovered this lovely tote with a note - saying "Love from your Sister Kath :-)". I was so moved that I almost cried."

Hello there! Are you ready for this week's installment of Everyday Handmade? You know I am!

The wonderful makers of the Artisans Gallery Team made my searching very easy this week! I went looking for beautiful, handmade, functional, fashionable bags and did you know that the AG Team has a bag for nearly every occasion!? There are so many beautiful bags, that it was hard to choose my favorites! Here are some of the great ones I found:

For great all around off-the-shoulder totes with beautiful fabrics, lots of pockets, and a modern twist, check out Ikabags. I love this apple green and white french messenger bag---not only is it extremely cute and functional, but it's even water resistant---perfect for a day at the beach! {Find it here}

A great purse to carry along two ways, while dreaming of blue skies comes from Star Bags. This here is called the "La Fleur Bag" in sky blue. {find many other great bags by Star Bags here}

For the absolute ultimate in traveling functionality, check out the amazing bag creations of Mims Maine. These bags can be worn as a backpack or off the shoulder! A favorite that I found is this one below made from upcycled Maine sail cloth! {find it in this section of Mims Maine's shop}.

And for a chic bag that will go with almost anything, check out this Auvenier Burlap Bag from Ira Grant (find it here). I love the combination of soft-toned burlap and dark leather.

And when you need to bring along just a little, {or need a pretty bit of organization inside your larger bag} Bagatelles & Co has a sweet collection of Kitty Mini Purses. This one below is called Apple and Rose. {Bagatelles also has a full line of gorgeous purses of all sizes}.

Hello there! I'm back with a new installment of Everyday Handmade, a blogging series where I round up beautiful everyday items from the talented Artisans Gallery Team! Today, I'm browsing that most everyday wearable comfortable article---the t-shirt. Let's see how a few lovely artisans are elevating this humble shirt to a fanciful, fun, wearable piece of art.

You can be cutting edge both figuratively and literally with this awesome t-shirt from Xenotees. I'm quite partial to green on green, but they've got a whole slew of color combos, as well as many other cool shirts! {Find the Cutting Edge shirts here}

For that vintage feel, head on over to Wren Willow for this sportin' vintage camera baseball shirt (find it here), as well as so many other great ones (more than you can count on 10 fingers and toes)!

Today, Jen from SewnNatural shares some of her latest handmade acquisitions with us.

"One of my very favorite Etsy artisans is SparkyJones, from British Columbia, Canada. Among other things, she sews the sweetest upcycled and organic caps and hats. I never knew I was a hat girl until I bought my first hat from her - I didn't take it off much last summer."

"I recently got another one from her, and have enjoyed wearing the green corduroy cap as the winter transitioned to spring. And I know it will come in quite handy in the months after the baby, when all mussed hair will be so stylishly covered."

"And I recently discovered the beautiful hand folded paper cranes of Osaka's origamiyyc. In preparation for our new baby, my daughter and I strung these intricately folded cranes in a rainbow of color from transparent string, and a wool-covered embroidery hoop we put together."

"They float and move in the breeze, and the colors and shapes are very magical."

Everyday Handmade: The Daily Grind

Hello everyone! I'm back with the newest installment of my blog series Everyday Handmade where I scour the lovely wares of the Artisans Gallery Team for items that infuse our everyday with creativity!

Today, my theme is: the daily grind. What place needs creativity and beauty more than the office {or wherever else we carry out our work}? I've found some lovely items that will do just that! Here we go:

Firstly, perhaps even more important than a place to work, you will need a place to capture all of your notes, lists, and ideas, and here's a journal from Earmark that will do just that, and do it with inspiration and style {this one's called "The Parade," find it in Earmark's journals/notebooks shop section}:

And, so you will always be able to find a pen or pencil nearby, check out this amazing paper bowl from Ruti's Roots, made from folded recycled paper {find it here}:

Everyday Handmade: Breakfast

Hello! I'm back with the second installment of my new series Everyday Handmade, where I scour the lovely Artisans Gallery Team for beautiful handmade items to enjoy in our everyday lives. Today my theme is breakfast, and here's my lineup for getting your day started off right:

First, a little something to inspire you to make your breakfast with care---a cutting board by Gray Works Design. If ever there was a little bit of poetry in the prep-work of cooking this will inspire it. Indeed you could also serve a divine breakfast to someone special on this cutting board.

And of course, you will need a mug and a bowl, the essential utensils of the morning meal. Just Mare's sweet honeycomb mug and bowl breakfast set would do the job quite nicely and with organic style (find it here):

Today, as part of our series to peek into our own collections of handmade pieces from other artisans, I'm delighted to share some of our favorite pieces. Please take a moment to check out the other posts in our ongoing series here.

A beautiful handbuilt pottery bowl by Marci from MarciG has found a home in the center of our dining table - it calls out to be held and admired, and brings such lovely color to our table even when the gardens are frozen over.

Oh, and those handmade custom pink stone bracelets on those little hands are by Michele from steinschmuckdesign. In just the right shade ("hot pink of course", says my daughter) and on elastic string so she can put them on and off herself.

On our couch we have a pair of handprinted ABC pillow shams by London's HelenRawlinson, screenprinted with eco friendly inks on organic cotton. Not only beautiful to look at, but great for learning too.

And here is one of my first Etsy purchases - a sweet pear pair in mustard by pillowhappy I gifted to my husband one Valentine's Day some years ago. I love them sitting on the chair my the window in our play/family/relaxing space. Filled with beans, they are textural and fun to hold. And they remind us of our October wedding years ago - we chose pears as a theme and used them in the place of flowers.

Everyday Handmade: Bath Time

Hello there! It's Nicole from Blue Bicicletta! I'm starting a new series of blog posts here on the Artisans Gallery Team blog called Everyday Handmade. I think that one of the most wonderful things about Etsy is the opportunity to connect with the makers of so many beautiful handmade things. While people are starting to think of Etsy for gifts and such, wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone also thought of it as an alternative way to get everyday items?

I personally have been trying to remind myself of this, and I would like to make this series of posts about showcasing wonderful everyday items from our talented Artisan Gallery Team! So, I'll be picking a theme each week and going on a mission to discover the amazing options for infusing the everyday with beautiful handmade lovelies.

This week, I'm doing a round up for that most relaxing and refreshing part of your day: bath time {or shower time, if you will}. Wouldn't it be wonderful to bring a little more handmade feel into your bath time? Here are some sweet and scented items that will do just that.

Check out A Breath of French Air for some beautiful scented Organic Body washes. Think Almond Vanilla, Eucalyptus Mint, Brown Sugar Fig. She also offers bar soaps, scrubs, lib balms and a whole slew of other all natural, body products. {find this body wash in her soap section}.
